- Recognize the organization and basic functioning of society from the main establishments, structures and services that make up a locality (city or town) as a space of coexistence.
- Illustrate and interpret processes and strategies of daily time measurement through the representation of daily routines and the determination of the periods dedicated to each.
- Understand written texts and infer their global meaning and main ideas, making reflections individually and jointly through literary gatherings that favour the development of respectful and effective communicative practices.
Service objectives:
- Conceive and plan an executable project with which to illustrate and favour the fulfilment of the rights of the child.
- Discriminate the most relevant elements of the shared needs of children throughout the project.
- Learn, support, and disseminate the work of social organizations such as Itaka-Escolapios, which work for the fulfilment of the rights of the child.

Valoración:
Considering especially the first two commitments for the Global Educational Pact proposed by the Church and Pope Francis (1. Putting the person at the centre and 2. Listening to the young generations), we will work to create conditions so that all members of the educational community know the Convention on the Rights of the Child signed in 1989.
From there, a Service-Learning project is proposed to be developed in the school by the hand of Elykia and Esengo, born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and members of the Itaka-Escolapios crew. Together with the rest of the group, they accompany Calasanz every year in the different missions, especially concerned with the defence of the rights of the world’s children. For the development of the project, 6 activities have been designed, which we recommend being carried out over a period of ten weeks, if possible, according to the following schedule:
- WEEK 1. Activity 1. Project presentation and Activity 2. Song of rights.
- WEEK 2. Activity 2. Song of rights and Activity 3. Where are our rights?
- WEEKS 3 and 4. Activity 3. Where are our rights? and Activity 4. Let’s talk about rights.
- WEEK 5. Activity 4. Let’s talk about rights.
- WEEK 6. Activity 4. Let’s talk about rights and Activity 5. Problems for some children.
- WEEK 7. Activity 6. How can we help? (service)
- WEEKS 8 and 9. Service development (One, two, three weeks, …; each lesson will determine this time according to the service to be performed and the organization of it)
- WEEK 10. Activity 7. Final celebration + Project evaluation.
It is key to keep in mind that during the development of this project it is not necessary to dedicate all the time of school to carry it out, because only a few hours a week will be needed. And, of course, it should be clarified that each centre should decide the sessions and activities to be developed according to the programming of the various subjects involved, although of course we recommend carrying out the entire project. Naturally, you must make the project your own and adjust it to the reality of each centre and each group-classroom.
The details of all the proposed activities can be found in Annex 1. Service-learning_activities 8-10 years old.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you cannot work with the service-learning methodology, and you need a simpler proposal, we have foreseen that, at least, you can work on the solidarity campaign by carrying out activities 1 and 6 after presenting the socio-educational centres of Itaka-Escolapios (link).
